Wooden mallet (H and HL)

The wooden mallet is the oldest in the history of the timpani mallet. The heads of models H2 and H6, turned on a lathe, are made of native robinia or wild service wood and glued on to hornbeam sticks. Model HL6, a wooden mallet (H6) wrapped with thin leather, has an impressively loud volume.

Model H4 is a wooden mallet with a flat head, of similar shape to BR2 and BRL2, turned from a single piece of hornbeam.

This type of mallet (H and HL) is used for clear rhythmic motifs and in the baroque and classical orchestra repertoire if only large timpani are available.
