Viennese flannel mallet (WF)

The traditional Viennese flannel mallet is a special feature of the Viennese tradition of timpani sound. The typical, relatively short hornbeam stick, the time-tested loden cloth made exclusively for Steiner superiormallets, and not least the traditional manufacture, make the Fromme Vienna flannel mallet a distinctive instrument with a sound that develops its special qualities particularly on a goatskin head. It may of course also be used on plastic or calfskin heads, where its characteristic tonal and handling features show to advantage.

Originally, during the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy and particularly in Vienna, timpani with goatskin heads were used. Apart from wood and wood/leather mallets, only mallets with loden-cloth discs of various sizes were used. Strictly speaking, the term "flannel mallet" is inaccurate, although it has become established internationally. At the beginning of the 20th century, timpani mallets with a variety of felt wrappings were rarely used in Vienna.

The Viennese flannel mallet is characterised by a full, dark sound with very little impact noise after a sometimes long breaking-in period.
